ALERT-INDIA (Association for Leprosy Education, Rehabilitation and Treatment – India)
ALERT-INDIA (Association for Leprosy Education, Rehabilitation and Treatment – India), a registered not-for-profit organization established in 1978, is committed to attain leprosy control besides other health promotion among the poor and marginalized communities in the state of Maharashtra. Since 1981, ALERT-INDIA had provided free medical and rehabilitation services to more than 30,000 people affected by leprosy through its treatment centres managed by the trained paramedical workers and doctors. This has enabled the people affected by leprosy, the most vulnerable section of our society, to lead a productive and dignified life. Since 2005, ALERT-INDIA had launched a ‘Leprosy Elimination Action Programme – LEAP’ to sustain leprosy control activities in 12 rural districts of Maharashtra including 7 tribal districts of Vidarbha region by involving all prospective stakeholders. LEAP is being implemented by a team of trained health workers in these 7 backward districts of Vidarbha region that are known to be highly prevalent for leprosy in Maharashtra.

Last 12 years, the efforts to sustain leprosy control activities through the public health system in 15 districts of Maharashtra has resulted in increased new case detection leading to gradual reduction in the prevalence of leprosy.
