Win Over Cancer

Vision Statement

My vision is to create a network all over India via suitable collaborations with skill development centers and employers so that no cancer impacted families suffer from unemployment during and after suffering from this disease both physically and mentally. In addition my vision for prosthetic bra project (CanWin) is to start free distribution of prosthetic bra in every major cancer hospital through out India.

Project Details

My father being a cancer patient, my parents and I started Win Over Cancer inspired by the real time hardships faced by us during my father's treatment. We are working with 3 tier motive- Save, Support and Survive. Saving people by spreading awareness about the disease and breaking the taboos in the society via cancer awareness and early detection camps in urban and semi urban areas; supporting the ones who have fell into this trap of cancer by giving free second opinions, counselling and discounted medicines and by helping the cancer survivors to literally survive in this society. We provide self innovated indigenous prosthetic bra to breast cancer survivors free of cost at AIIMS thrice a week , Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital thrice a month and pan India via couriers. In addition we provide skill development and job opportunities to cancer survivors/ any family member of cancer patient to give them a sustainable income. We have collaborations with corp-orates (for skilled) and NSDC centers for skill incubation and further employment(for unskilled). We also have a job portal on our websites where employer post jobs and benificiary upload CV hence bridging the much wide gap.

Focus area of project

Stage of your work in poverty eradication

Stabilised; looking to scale

Aims to eradicating poverty

In India there are approximately 14.5 Lac cases of cancer, of which 52% are in the working age group. Skewed treatment facilities and high cost of treatment often lead them to lose jobs and 4.5 lac families are pushed to poverty line because of this disease. Realizing this impact of cancer, our NGO is working towards providing these families some sustainable source of income they can earn, hence we either provide cancer survivor with job/skill development or any of the family member the same therefore uplifting the family as a whole. In addition we are providing breast prosthesis and pocket bras to breast cancer survivors who cannot afford it. Apart from the cosmetic purpose, every breast cancer survivor with full breast removal needs to wear it for medical purpose. Most either cannot afford it( Rs 10000-15000) or go for cheaper foam based alternatives that are hyper allergic and adverse the wounds. Our self innovated prosthetic bra has been approved by various oncologists and is being distributed free of cost pan India.

Current impact of the project

As per the numbers, through our cancer awareness and detection camps we have impacted 25000 people, have served more than 400 patients/survivors with prosthetic bra in 1 year and have employed 7 cancer survivors/family members ,helped 3 to start their own venture and recently got collaborated with 2 NSDC certified skill development centers.

Proposed impact in future

1 year down the line we wish to strengthen our base city- Delhi NCR by further collaborations with skill development centers especially nears apex cancer institutes like AIIMS and Delhi Cancer Institute to provide short span skill development to patients/family members coming from remote areas for treatment (as mostly are staying in dharamshala near such hospitals) and thus can imply such skills after their treatment in their home towns. For prosthetic bra project we wish to expand in other apex cancer institutes like Safdarjang, Delhi Cancer Institue etc. We also aim to design a no tobacco campaign and spread further awareness among youth, the real "change makers" of future. 5 years down the line we wish to expand to states like Mumbai and Bangluru and have our channelizing partners to generate impact to the greater extend.
